You Can Now Change Your Gmail Address — Without Losing Anything!
Ever wished you could change your old Gmail address but dreaded losing your emails, photos, and files? For years, Google’s answer was a flat “sorry — you’ll have to start over.” Well, great news — that’s finally changing! As we head into 2026, Google is introducing a new feature that lets you change your @gmail.com address without losing a single thing. No back-ups, no manual transfers, no headaches — just a fresh start.
Is the Update Available for You?
Google is rolling this new feature out gradually. Here’s how to check to see if your account has access to this feature yet:
On the left, select Personal info.
Scroll to Contact info and click Email.
Check your Google Account email.
If you see an Edit pencil or Change button, you’re in luck!
If you see “You can’t change this address,” don’t worry — your turn is coming soon.
What You Need to Know
Before you jump in and pick your new Gmail address, here are a few key guidelines:
You can change your Gmail address only once every 12 months.
You get a maximum of three address changes per account, so you only get to make 3 changes in a lifetime.
You won’t lose your old email address, and you won’t lose any mail. Your old address becomes an alias, so messages sent to it still arrive in your new inbox. No lost mail — ever.
Remember! You may not see the edit/change option yeta s Google is rolling out this feature gradually. If you want to change your Gmail address without losing anything, keep checking. Very soon, everyone who wants to will be able to change their Gmail address. So, if your turn hasn’t come yet, be patient!
Oh, and one more thing: Google is going to be putting emphasis on tidying up inactive accounts. Even if you’ve changed your address, make sure to log in to your old Gmail address once or twice a year to keep it active — just in case. If you don’t, Google may delete it as an inactive account.
