FastStone Image Viewer

We’ve always been big fans of FastStone Capture for a very long time. In fact, it’s our screenshot tool of choice. Sure, it’s old, but the developer still updates it, and it does everything we need it to do

The other day, I was downloading an updated version of FastStone Capture, and accidentally downloaded FastStone Image Viewer. Now, we are Irfanview fans and have been since Darcy introduced me to it way back in 1998. I’ve used it Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8x, and with every version of Windows 10, I’ve had. But there’s an opportunity in every miscue, and so it was with my mistaken download.

Now, I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that I’m about to replace IrfanView with FastStone Image Viewer, but I’m going to tell you that many of you will love the extra features of FastStone Image Viewer that are missing in Irfanview.

FastStone Image Viewer is an image browser that almost instantly provides you with a “contact sheet” of every image in a folder. You can batch rename, you can create slideshows and even add music, batch resize photos, and much more.

And rarely do we ever come across a developer who is more verbose than us. But the developer of FastStone Image Viewer is one. So, rather than us telling you all about the program, we’re going to let him/her do that for you and spare you our sparkling diatribe.

So, we’ll start with some screenshots, and then let Mr. or Ms. FastStone tell you all about FastStone Image Viewer.

I have used FastStone Image Viewer for years.
It has so many advantages over other paid programs including Photoshop.
They have an excellent tutorial that you can download for free.(approx 72 Pages)
To access any menus you need to point your cursor to the left hand side of your monitor screen so the menu will show and be accessible to make your choice to work on a particular photo, item etc.
Same applies to right hand side and top of monitor screen to discover other options.

Faststone is a great tool to hace.
What I like most: I can do a slideshow of everythi gin the folder and sub-folders.
What I don’t like most: when I edit a picture it does not make a backup copy like Picasa does.

Fastone Capture was free years ago, but if I download and install the new version it says my trial has expired and I have to pay $19.95. I always liked “Capture” but cannot get it on my Win 10 machine without paying for it. I guess I’ll have to keep using the Windows snipping tool or the new version of it (which basically sucks in comparison to the old version of Capture that I used in the past) unless someone can tell me how to get the new version. I don’t mind paying for something that works, but I’m always hesitant with new versions that usually aren’t as good as the original, so would like to try it again in the new upgraded version before I pay for it. So, I question my luck with using the Image Viewer if I can’t access the Capture program.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. FastStone Capture has not been free since 2007. The FastStone Image Viewer has always been free. I don’t think you can assume that if the developer decided to charge for a program 12 years ago, he’s going to charge for a different program now. Besides, you can still download and use the free version of FastStone Capture. Additionally, if you had downloaded and installed FastStone Capture in 2007 when it was free, you were not obligated to upgrade to the paid version. The paid version has more features, but the free version is certainly a good screenshot /screen capture program.
