How to Restore Files From a Windows 10 File History Backup

File History in Windows 10 is a great way to back up your personal files and folders. If you have File History  backing up your files, you can use your File History backup to restore your personal files on your current computer or on new or different Windows 10 computer.

On your current PC, you can restore files from File History backup on your external drive, this way:

  1. Settings
  2. Update & security
  3. Select  Backup
  4. Select More options
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the window, and choose “Restore files from a current backup”.

You can also use Control Panel:

  1. Open Control Panel (Windows Key + X and click Control Panel)
  2. System and Security
  3. File History
  4. Restore personal files

If you have File History backups that were created on different Windows 10 computer, all you have to do is set up File History (Windows 10) on the new computer , then select the drive containing your File History backups from the other computer. They’ll automatically appear in the “Restore Files: dialog so you can restore files just as you would if the backup were created on the current PC.

I recently had a hard drive failure. Luckily (I thought) I have had File History on for a couple of years on my external hard drive, so restoring files will be easy.

I followed your steps above, but since it was a new Windows install, the first thing File History did is make a back-up of my current (new) system. Therefore it is now not letting me view any history from my external hard drive other than the backup it created today (which is blank).

So my hard dive has 1TB of back-up data on it that I can’t restore from??? Surely that can’t be right! Help!

Graeme, because I wanted to show you how to access the files using a tutorial – I sent it to you via email. I will publish the tutorial I sent you so anyone else who gets a new computer or installs Windows anew, will see that file history can be used in many ways. Hope it helps you.
