How to send a Web page with Chrome

There’s an extension (by Google) called “Email This Page” which is available from http://goo.gl/jtGzK  . Following are a few details from Google about the Email This Page extension for Chrome:

This extension adds an email button to the toolbar which allows you to email the page link using your default mail client or Gmail. If you often share web page addresses (URLs) with others, this extension will make your life easier.

When you want to share the web page you are looking at, just click on the email button and this extension reads the web page address from the current tab, plus the text you have selected on the page (up to a certain limit) and creates an email out of it for easy sharing with your friends.

If this sounds like something you would like to add to your Chrome browser, visit http://goo.gl/jtGzK  and add the extension to Chrome. It only takes a few seconds and it works great.

I just copy the URL (I shorten it with bit.ly if too long) then select Gmail in the ‘Apps’ box in the left of the bookmarks bar and drop the URL into the composed message box. No need for an extension.

There is a shortener extension for Chrome that’s faster than Bit.ly, called goog.gl. Additionally it can’t possible be fast to:

      1. Shorten a URL (If necessary)
      2. Open a mail program
      3. Paste in a link.

If you already have the mail program open, with a compose window open, it may be as fast. However, most of us don’t browse the web with a compose window open just in case we come across something we went to send to ourselves or share with someone else. 🙂

Thanks TC – you were able to review all possible problems and managed to hit the problem. When I first set up Windows 10 I did properly set all my defaults in Settings – System – Default apps but later I installed a different version of Microsoft Office and that setting then reverted to Chrome – hence “Email This Page” quit working. It never occurred to me to re-do those settings!! Thank you for all your help!!! I love the extension and am pleased to have it back.

I have been using this feature in Chrome since the extension was first introduced – up until I installed Windows 10 it has worked perfectly. Now it now longer works nor do any other extensions like it such as “Send Link by Email or Gmail”. I have checked the box for “your default email handler” and still nothing. Now I’m back to copying the URL and pasting it – a much longer process when used to just hitting the envelope in the top right corner and it automatically goes into a new email….. What am I missing and why does it no longer work? I have tried uninstalling and re-installing it and still nothing.

We test the programs we recommend on 2 or 3 computers, but we can’t test them on all computers. The program worked well on Windows 10 and Windows 7 computers with the Chrome browser. If it didn’t work for you, you should contact the developer – perhaps he has heard of this problem before. Or perhaps you’re using an ad blocker or you do not have a default email program chosen in Settings–>System—>Default apps. If you chose “Google Chrome” keep in mind that, while it is listed as a choice under Default programs, Google Chrome is a Web browser, not an email program (Chrome does not equal “Gmail”). Best thing for you to do is contact the developer. We tested it, it worked great for us, and we recommended it. However, we can’t possibly provide support for every program we recommend.

Margie Paregian, I had the same problems until after a Microsoft update . I use Chrome as my default browser and it started asking me which browser I wanted to use. Then sometimes when I would go to a site where I should be in the Chrome browser I would be in Explorer. The point I’m getting at talking about email neither one of my extensions would work in Chrome after that update. I have ” Send Link by Email or Gmail” and a “send link button” you just drop on the bookmarks bar. I was just trying them both out. Then all of a sudden they both stop working at the same time. I don’t think so! All this going on at the same time. I went back and started setting things back to default browser, email program, etc. Also defaults for the program (looked inside that), and saved that. Who knows what else had been changed in defaults. Then things started working. That may not help you but that does sound familiar.

    Happy Thanksgivings everyone…D.

      Try this.

      1. Right click on the Desktop, select New/ Shortcut.
      2. In the Type the location of the item: box paste:
      https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&source=mailto&to=%25s
      3. Click Next.
      4. In the Type name of shortcut put something like ‘Gmail compose’.
      5. Click Finish.
You will now have a shortcut on your desktop direct to Gmail;s Compose box.
Just copy and paste your web URL you want to send (shortened if necessary with bit.ly or goo.gl – note that you can customise the bit.ly address to bit.ly/Gmailcompose when composing the above address).
One click and paste URL. How simple is that!

I should have added, that if you use this custom bit.ly extension http://bit.ly/Gmailcompose for the URL above that is all you need to go to to the compose box in Gmail. You could also save the bit.ly link as a Chrome tab or bookmark.
