How to Turn Off Motion Sensors in Chrome

Have you ever heard of Motion Sensors in Google Chrome? They were added to Chrome last year (2019).

What do Motion sensors do? Motions sensors gather data from the device’s motion, ambient light, and other sensors. When combined with a user’s browsing habits and other information that Websites and Web developers collect, motion sensor data can be used to identify unique patterns that connect users to their devices and allow them to be tracked and fingerprinted online.

We’re not sure how much tracking is going on via Motion sensor data, but it just seems like a wise idea to turn off Motion sensors completely. It’s easy to do- here’s how to do it.

You can turn off Chrome’s Motion sensors by typing chrome://settings/content/sensors in Chrome’s address bar and then press Enter. Turn the switch in the Motion sensors dialog “Off”.

We do not know, and since leaving Motion sensors on does not benefit you, why not just turn it off, regardless of what they might or might not do. Kinda like better safe than sorry.

Mine was turned off the first time I saw it in each browser I use and learned what it did. I think from what I have read it is more of a security risk than what I’m willing to take (my opinion).

I think infoave is right on caution.

Edge is doing the same thing. Your link appears to work with the same address you provide, just replace Chrome with Edge.

You can turn off Chrome’s Motion sensors by typing chrome://settings/content/sensors in Chrome’s address bar and pressing Enter.

They are buried in Settings > Advanced > Site settings > Pemissions > Motion sensors.
