If You’re Using Any of These Browser Extensions – Remove Them Now

Extensions and add-ons are a great way to extend the capabilities of your favorite browser, however, they also provide an easy vector for cybercriminals and other miscreants to threaten the security of your PC and monitor and profit from your private online activities.

A popular security firm said this week that it has identified malicious software hidden in at least twenty-eight third-party Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge extensions. These extensions have been installed by over three million users.

The company warned users that if these malicious extensions are installed, they could potentially redirect users to phishing sites, which could lead to personal data being stolen — including the user’s birth date, email addresses, and device information, including first sign-in time, last login time, name of the device, operating system, browsers used, and IP addresses which be used to approximate the geographical location history of the user.

This is a great time to remind you to use caution installing an extension for your browser and to always make sure you have good, up-to-date antivirus software installed. And it’s an excellent time for you to review all your browser extensions and to remove the ones you don’t recognize as well as those you rarely use.

Here is the list of the malicious browser extensions

Note: These extensions are for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. They work with popular online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, and Vimeo, and supposedly “help” users download videos and other content from those sites. If you have any of these extensions installed, remove them immediately.

I don’t use any of these but good to know.

I keep going through my browsers to see if I can use fewer extensions.

    Thanks for the info…D.

It depends on what browser you’re using. In Firefox, click on the 3-horizontal bars icon in the to-right corner and click “Add-ons” in the dropdown menu. In Chrome, type chrome://extensions/ in the address bar and press Enter. In MS Edge type edge://settings in the address bar and press Enter.

    Thank you TC & Darcy,
I never trusted most of the extensions available, they are a ‘want’ and not a ‘need’ as I have used
a computer without them since before joining Cloudeight and your great organisation.

I use Dark Reader, LastPass, Emsisoft Browser Security, and AdBlock
I also had windows resizer but I removed it because it didn’t work for me.
Thankfully. I don’t use instagram so never down loaded any extensions. Thank you for the heads up. Have a wonderful Christmas TC and Darcy and keep safe
