Increase the battery life of your Windows 7 laptop with a hidden Windows 7 tool

Here’s a tip for you advanced users who want to get the most out of the battery life on any Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 includes a hidden tool that lets you examine and review your laptop’s energy use and helps you by making recommendations on how you can improve it.

To run the hidden tool in Windows 7 do this:

1. Open a command prompt as an administrator. (Type cmd in the start menu search box. When the cmd icon appears at the top, right-click it and choose “Run as administrator.” from the right-click menu.

2. At the prompt in the command window, type in the following:

powercfg -energy -output \c:\users\yourusername\desktop\Energy.html

(Replace “yourusername” with your Windows user name. You can save the output file anywhere you like, we chose the Desktop for convenience.)

3. It will take a minute or a bit more for Windows to examine your power consumption and usage. Then it will analyze the data and create an easy-to-use report for you in HTML format; by default this file will be placed on your desktop. You can read it with your default web browser. Follow the recommendations in the report to increase the efficiency of your Laptop’s power usage and increase your laptop’s battery life.
