Dan has a problem with Windows Updates
I’m using Windows XP SP3, and every time I try to install Windows updates I get the following error message:

“WindowsUpdate_0000064C” “WindowsUpdate_dt000”
1. 1 Troubleshoot problems with installing updates

I’ve looked all over for a solution to this but I can’t find one. I figure if anyone could help it would be you. Can you? Thanks, Dan.

Our answer
We know more than a few people have gotten this error at update time. How do we know? Because Microsoft has a fix for it. It’s not very well known and most people aren’t aware that they offer it. Why they don’t make it more visible we don’t know. But it’s there and you have two ways to fix update errors – in normal mode, and if that doesn’t work, in aggressive mode. Microsoft warns users not to use aggressive mode unless running the program in normal mode does not fix the problem.

If you’ve been having problems with incomplete Windows Updates, you should give this Microsoft “Fix It” a try. It will reset the Microsoft Windows update components in your Windows XP or Windows Vista computer. We tested this on a Vista machine that was having problems with Windows Updates, and this MS Fix It fixed the problem for us.

Note: Though the page at Microsoft.com appears to say this fix is only for Windows Vista (Service Pack 2 installed), we assure you it’s for Windows XP as well. Microsoft states further down on the page under “Applies to”:

APPLIES TO
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Enterprise
Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Ultimate
