Many of you have Windows 8 and many of you have installed a start button replacement like Classic Shell. But did you know that the old Windows Key can also be used as a surrogate start button? Here’s how.

All you need to do is press the Windows key then start typing the first few letters in the name of the program that you want to launch. As soon as you do that, the Windows 8 Apps Search tool will launch and begin searching for an application that matches your inquiry.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you want to run Notepad. Just press the Windows Key and type Notepad. As soon as you do this the Apps Search will find Notepad and then all you have to do is click its icon to launch it. You can launch almost any program you have installed this way — and once you get the hang of it, you may find you don’t need that start button so much after all!
