Windows CleanUp! A Trip Down Memory Lane

We had a question sent to us this week by Frank, a Cloudeight subscriber. Frank asked if we still recommend a program we recommended long ago, called Windows CleanUp!

So,  I rummaged through some old programs and and found Windows CleanUp! – the program that EB & I used to call “the toilet-flusher” program. If you download, install and run it, you’ll see why. Otherwise, you’ll just have to imagine whatever you will.

I decided to check to see if there was a newer version than the one I had installed years ago, and to my surprise there wasn’t a upgrade. Still the same version number, same file size, everything was the same. But, I decided to re-download it (February 28, 2017) and install it.

We’re going to let Stephen Gould save the day for you and let you escape my incessant tendency to wordiness: Stephen, our old friend, take it away:

“Free disk space & protect your privacy

All in one easy solution. And all for free!

Introducing Windows CleanUp!, the quickest and easiest way to delete temporary files from your system.

CleanUp! is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your temporary folders and more.

CleanUp! frees disk space and reduces the “clutter” on your computer helping it to run more efficiently. It also can be used as a way to protect your privacy on the Internet. You can even instruct CleanUp! to securely delete files making it impossible to retrieve their contents using lower-level disk tools – just another way of protecting your privacy.

No gimmicks here, CleanUp! is so easy to set up and use that you’ll have a lean, clean, mean machine in minutes.

Thanks for trying CleanUp!

While Stephen hasn’t updated this program in a long time, he has changed his page to “Introducing…Windows CleanUp”. We have used Windows CleanUp on Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10. It works on 32-bit or 64-bit computers

While Stephen no longer lists Windows versions that Windows CleanUp! works with, we’ll just say it works with all versions of Windows. Here’s a screen shot of Windows CleanUp! running on my Windows 10 64-bit computer:

CLOUDEIGHT INFOAVE
Above: Notice the old-style Windows 98 / XP user Interface of CleanUp. It’s an oldie. but a goodie.

Above: A little later on…  as you can see, its about time I cleaned this PC up! I’m embarrassed. See? Do as I say, not as I do. That’s what my granny used to tell me, I tells ya!

WARNING: RUN THE PROGRAM AS IT IS WITHOUT GOING INTO  OPTIONS. IN OPTIONS YOU CAN CHOOSE THOROUGH CLEANUP WHICH WILL REMOVE ALL YOUR FAVORITES, BOOKMARKS, BROWSER-STORED PASSWORDS. LEAVE THE OPTIONS BUTTON ALONE UNLESS YOU ARE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

Above, please note the download link. You don’t have to click the “Pay Now” button to download the program – the Pay Now button is the developers donation button. You can download Windows CleanUp directly from this link

If you’re looking for a fun, easy-to-use program that does just what it says it does, then you’ll love CleanUp! The first time you run it, you’ll get a laugh too. Learn more about Windows CleanUp! from this page.  The direct download link  is here.

It’s still a 332 KB download; it’s still easy to install and run. Windows CleanUp still works like a good program should. Simple, easy and effective.

Thank you, Frank, for reminding us about Windows CleanUp! and starting us on a trip down memory lane.

PS: There are a billion Windows Cleanup tools out there. Many of them free or that have free versions. And yes there are some excellent ones with lots of razzle-dazzle features – like CCleaner. Choose the one you like best. If you want to be mimimalistic, you can just use Windows built-in Disk Cleanup (Cleanmgr.exe). To run Windows Disk Cleanup, press Windows Key + R and type CLEANMGR in the Run dialog then press Enter. It works on any version of Windows.

WHY NOT USE CCLEANER, THAT DOES EVERYTHING, AND MORE THAN WINDOWS CLEAN UP?

Use what you like. We have never been fans of CCleaner… anyway we reviewed Windows CleanUp! because a reader asked us to do so. He wanted to know if we still thought it was a good program and we took another look and found it still useful. As to what cleans better I’m sure there are dozens of free cleaner programs that will tell you they clean better than the others. So use what you like – as long as what you like isn’t harmful or malware, use it – it’s your PC.

The Windows CleanUp! web site lists several browsers that it supports, but does NOT include Chrome – would that be a problem?
