Simply Windows – Could Microsoft Be Taking Simple Branding to a New Level with Upcoming OS?Rumors are now suggesting that Microsoft’s next Windows iteration, which is known tentatively and unofficially as Windows 9, may be getting renamed and rebranded, with Microsoft possibly dropping the version number all together.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen Motorola release new iterations of its flagship and entry-level phones, and stick with the names Moto X and Moto G respectively. Tech journalists call HTC’s 2014 flagship the HTC One M8, but in reality, it’s simply the HTC One, just like last year’s HTC hero. Yes, it does seem as if tech companies want to keep it as simple as possible for consumers, though there have been some, such as Apple (iPhone), Samsung (Galaxy S, Galaxy Note), and Microsoft (Windows) that stick with the naming conventions of old. But new reports claim that might not be the case for long in Redmond.

According to these rumors, Microsoft’s Windows 8 may be the company’s last OS to come with a numerical designation; instead, the software we currently call Windows 9 for convenience may simply be announced as “Windows” when it arrives on Tuesday. That’s right – just Windows, no “9” or “2014” at the end, and probably not “Threshold” as well, the latter being the OS’ internal codename. It’s also possible that Microsoft may drop a huge surprise on all of us and go with a brand new name that isn’t Windows.

Though some may see it as a case of overkill, market analysts believe this could be a sound move for Microsoft following the Windows 8 debacle. According to Gartner analyst Michael Silver, Windows 8 has given the Windows brand “negative equity”, due to the negative customer feedback the outgoing OS had received. That, as we know, was mainly due to the huge paradigm shift to Live Tiles and the eschewing of the hallmark Start button. The Start button should return in earnest on Microsoft’s new OS – regardless of what it’s called – while the platform may present a nice blend of new-school and old-school elements for everyone to enjoy.

Sounds like Microsoft is being run by people with “young minds” and from my observations, some young minds just don’t know what to do. They like “change” but don’t know how to make positive, productive change. They never think of keeping what works from the past, and they usually don’t work from a ‘wisdom standpoint.’ It’s like throwing someone in the kitchen to prepare a meal and they have never cooked before.

They should have just went and improved the best Windows that they ever had “Windows XP” but no they had to mess around making people use something that only they thought was best. Well I hope Microsoft learned their lesson just because they think something is good it cost them a huge loss in the computer world.

    This is too, too funny.

The whole concept of numbered OS is to let customers know we have improved upon prior releases, Like VMS 5.2 versus VMS 5.0 (yes, I am aware of the dreadful release without the TTY module). Whereas a different name was to match different hardware, like RT11 versus VMS versus WNT vs MUMPS

People get tired of having to absorb new ‘learning curves.’ Everytime you turn around there is something technically new to learn. Does it drastically improve our quality of life? No…. (at least not mine) Keep it simple, keep it sweet. I’m in the ‘Baby Boomer’ category. We’ve had to deal with tons of new technology over the past 65 or less years and we’ve done so with gusto. There comes a time when our “hard drives” become loaded and it’s just not important to keep up with and incorporate new technology just because someone thinks it’s time to make everyone dig back into their pockets to make a small group of people wealthier.
