Wednesday Newsbytes: New Windows 11 Backup App Copies Apple’s Time Machine… Windows 11 Update Brings Cool New Features; Why Is Your HP Printer Offline?; Microsoft Unleashes Bing AI on Chrome & Firefox; Lawyer In Trouble for Using ChatGPT to Cite Fake Cases … and more!

Every day we scan the tech world for interesting news in the world of technology and sometimes from outside the world of technology. Every Wednesday, we feature news articles that grabbed our attention over the past week. We hope you find this week’s  ‘Wednesday Newsbytes’ informative and interesting!

The new Windows 11 Backup App takes another cue from the Mac

The latest Windows 11 Insider Preview includes a new Backup App that functions in a similar fashion to Time Machine in macOS.

The backup app will allow for more regular backups of most apps, settings, and data in Windows 11. This will allow for easier restore abilities, as well as the ability to transfer data to a new PC, NotebookCheck noted.

Notably, Time Machine works by allowing you to frequently back up data in macOS. If an issue arises with your Mac system, you can select a date of one of your most recent backups, before the issue occurred, and restore the system to that date to see if the issue will resolve. Time Machine has been a staple on macOS since 2007…

Windows 11 Moment 3 update is packed with cool features – here are 5

Microsoft’s latest feature update for Windows 11 is now rolling out and is full of big changes. Dubbed “Moment 3”, the release brings long-requested features and quality-of-life improvements that make it an update worth installing straight away.

Seeing as Moment 2 was released late in February, it’s quite a pleasant surprise to see how quickly the next release has arrived. These Moment updates are part of Microsoft’s approach to improving Windows 11 – instead of dropping a huge update every year, the company has shifted to putting out new features as part of more frequent cumulative updates. So, without further ado, here’s our pick of the five coolest features coming our way with Moment 3.

1. Taskbar and Notification Improvements

Windows veterans will be happy to find a few improvements to the taskbar, like a network icon that will indicate an active VPN connection with a small lock icon – helpful if you’re one of those people who often forget whether or not you’ve got your VPN turned on. Keep in mind, though, that the icon will only appear when you use ‘native’ VPN connections set up in the settings app, and won’t pop up if you’re using third-party VPN applications. So that’s a bit of a bummer.

Most people might find the updated taskbar clock to be the best change in the Moment 3 update, as the clock can now display seconds! It’s about time (pun intended).

The most helpful change to notifications is the ability to copy two-factor authentication codes from desktop push notifications with one click. This feature is already present on Android and iOS, so it’s good to see Microsoft finally bringing it to the desktop operating system – so no more opening emails just to copy a few numbers…

Why Is Your HP Printer Offline? 6 Fixes for Printing Connection Issues

Are you having issues with your HP printer? Here are some ways you can solve the problem.

It’s always a kick in the teeth when you’re trying to print something out, but your printer just isn’t playing ball. With wireless printers, we rely on the internet to keep things afloat, but it’s easy to run into problems.

You may be struggling with this issue if you have a wireless HP printer. So, why is your HP printer offline, and how can you get it back up and running again?

1. A Faulty Wi-Fi Connection

Most of our devices require wireless connections to work nowadays, be it via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, radio frequencies, or even infrared. This isn’t any different for most modern wireless HP printers. As you connect your wireless printer to your Wi-Fi network, any issues with your Wi-Fi can cause issues for wireless printers.

Unfortunately, a faulty Wi-Fi connection isn’t caused by just one issue. There is a wide range of factors that may be affecting your Wi-Fi connection to your printer. You can often resolve router issues by simply restarting the router itself. But other factors may be at play here, such as heat stress, outdated or buggy firmware, etc.

If your router may be at fault when your HP printer is offline, try restarting it first. Also, consider forgetting and reconnecting to the network on the printer itself. If these two solutions fail…

Microsoft is preparing to unleash Bing AI on Chrome and Firefox browsers

…and indeed other major web browsers

Bing AI should soon be usable in other browsers besides Edge, so the army of Chrome users out there can get a piece of Microsoft’s chatbot if they so wish.

Neowin spotted that Microsoft’s head of Advertising and Web Services, Mikhail Parakhin, told us more about where Bing AI will be headed in the near future (on Twitter).

In addition, larger context size for Balanced, big improvements in disengagement rate (especially for code writing), improvements in Bing Image Creator, hopefully first experiments in enabling third party browsers.May 30, 2023.

That includes the “first experiments in enabling third-party browsers”, as you can see from the tweet.

Can’t you already get the Bing chatbot in Chrome (or other browsers for that matter)? No, not as such, although admittedly there are workarounds in the form of unofficial extensions (clunky fudges, really) for Chrome and Firefox to enable Bing AI within their walls.

Official support would obviously be much better to have, though, and it’d be a good way for Microsoft to get more folks using the chatbot…

Lawyer cited 6 fake cases made up by ChatGPT; judge calls it “unprecedented”

Judge weighs punishment for lawyer who didn’t bother to verify ChatGPT output.

A lawyer is in trouble after admitting he used ChatGPT to help write court filings that cited six nonexistent cases invented by the artificial intelligence tool.

Lawyer Steven Schwartz of the firm Levidow, Levidow, & Oberman “greatly regrets having utilized generative artificial intelligence to supplement the legal research performed herein and will never do so in the future without absolute verification of its authenticity,” Schwartz wrote in an affidavit on May 24 regarding the bogus citations previously submitted in US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Schwartz wrote that “the use of generative artificial intelligence has evolved within law firms” and that he “consulted the artificial intelligence website ChatGPT in order to supplement the legal research performed.”

The “citations and opinions in question were provided by ChatGPT which also provided its legal source and assured the reliability of its content,” he wrote. Schwartz admitted that he “relied on the legal opinions provided to him by a source that has revealed itself to be unreliable,” and stated that it is his fault for not confirming the sources provided by ChatGPT.

Schwartz didn’t previously consider the possibility that an artificial intelligence tool like ChatGPT could provide false information…

Microsoft makes some bold claims about performance improvements in Windows 11

Microsoft has used the recent release of the Moment 3 update for Windows 11 to look back at the improvements it has made to the operating system since its launch. More than this, there is a “behind-the-scenes peek into how performance improvements are delivered”.

The company boasts proudly of the “delightful performance” its developers have delivered to users of Windows 11. Pointing to statistics such as speeding up frequently used shell interaction by up to 15 percent, Microsoft says that over the last year it has made Windows 11 “faster, more reliable, and more efficient”.

In a blog post written by Sharif Farag, Microsoft says that it has “made major strides in improving fundamentals across Windows”. There are various impressive-sounding stats to work through that show the work developers have done, but it’s intriguing to see how Microsoft approaches the issues that users complain about.

When it comes to speeding up start times for Windows 11…
