Remove and Sanitize Files

Coming Soon – A Deeper Clean for Your Hard Drive

In a recent preview build of Windows 11, Microsoft added a new option called Remove & sanitize files inside its Cloud Rebuild feature.

When you reset a computer the traditional way, Windows quickly clears out file names and makes room for new things, but the actual data often stays buried on the drive until new files write over it. The new sanitization option works differently. Instead of just erasing the surface, it sends a direct command to your computer’s storage drive telling it to securely wipe all data at the hardware level before installing a fresh copy of Windows.

Microsoft designed this specific feature for PCs that are being:

  • Sold to a new owner online

  • Given away to friends, family, or charity

  • Returned to a store or leasing company

  • Dropped off for electronics recycling

Permanent Means Permanent

Microsoft warns that this new wiping process is completely irreversible. Once it starts, your photos, documents, and personal settings are gone forever. If you ever use it, double-check that you’ve backed up everything you care about to an external drive or cloud storage first.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the feature relies on your computer’s hard drive correctly carrying out the erase command. Most modern drives handle this easily, but performance can vary depending on the age and brand of your hardware.

Coming Soon to Your PC?

If you check your settings today, you won’t see this option just yet. Tech site Windows Latest first spotted the feature in an experimental test version of Windows 11 (Build 26340.9502).

Microsoft regularly tests new ideas with Windows Insiders before deciding whether to release them to everyone. They have noted that this feature could be tweaked or changed before a final release—or it might take some time to roll out to standard PCs. Still, it’s a welcome sign that keeping our personal data safe may soon be getting easier!

I charged up an old laptop in order to reset it, wiping out all my personal stuff. Well, all I got was a big blank black screen. So, I put it away again. What is the way to really get this kind of thing done? Any secret keys to hit so I can reset it before giving it to a friend?
