What to do if ads start popping up all over

When Ads Start Popping Up All Over - Cloudeight

We’ve been getting a lot of emails lately and people are telling us that all of sudden when they browse the web or check their email online ads start appearing.

Well, we’ll admit, Windows updates have not been paragons of flawless software engineering – quite the contrary. Windows updates may be a lot of things, but they don’t install malware or adware on your computer. And many people tell us they think all the ads started with a Windows update.

It’s natural when things change to blame the last thing that changed on your computer – if that was a Windows update – it gets the blame. But Windows updates do not install bad extensions in your favorite browser. But many other tricky software bundles do.  In this era of chicanery and trickery, you have to be careful about what you install these days – especially freeware.

Many excellent, clean freeware programs exist. But a lot of good freeware programs are bundled with badware by download sites. CNet and Softonics are known for this, but many other download sites are playing this game now too.  At this time, we only trust one download site unconditionally and that’s Snapfiles. And for an alternate download site, we like Major Geeks.

If all of a sudden you start getting ads popping up whenever you browse the web or check your email, the first thing you should do is reset your browser and clear your browser’s history.

Here’s how to reset the three most popular browsers.

Chrome – Click the Menu icon (very top-right; it looks like 3 vertical dots). Click Settings. At the very bottom of the Settings dialog, click Show Advanced Settings, scroll to the bottom, and click “Reset settings”. For a complete guide see our tutorial here.

Firefox – Click Help / Troubleshooting information / Refresh Firefox. For a complete tutorial on resetting Firefox see this page

Microsoft Edge – Click on the 3 horizontal 3 dots (icon) on the top right of EDGE, and then click Settings. From the menu that appears on the left click “Reset settings”. In the next dialog, click on “Restore settings to their default values” when it appears in the right pane. A dialog will appear labeled “Reset settings”. It contains information about resetting MS Edge and buttons labeled “Reset” and “Cancel”. Click on “Reset”.  See our tutorial here.

    Hello

My problem is not ads popping up but I am getting a lot of spam in my inbox usually it goes directly into junk mail box but every time I open my email inbox all I see is spam email. Also on fb I am getting a lot of ads.

If I say unsubscribe on my email does this open up as meaning to send me spam from other companies?

According to Dataprot…About 122.3 billion email spam messages get distributed each day. That’s about 85% of the world’s daily email traffic. So, you’re never going to get rid of all spam. We use Gmail to filter out spam with over 95% reliability. The trouble with most spam filters is they throw the baby out with the bathwater. Gmail filters almost all spam while putting very few good emails in the spam folder. We get hundreds of emails a week and a great deal of spam… Gmail works for us. You can read how we use Gmail to control spam, here.

Those are not ads, those appear there when you download (Save) pictures from the web.

There should be an X in the far right corner. You can click that to clear the downloads from the bottom of your browser. If you’re using Chrome and you don’t want to see the “Shelf” at the bottom anymore see this Google page.
