Turn Off All Background Apps in Windows 10

This tip is for Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703), Fall Creators Update (version 1709),
and newer versions of Windows 10

Prior to Windows 10 Creators Update, turning off background apps meant you had to go through a long list of apps and turn each off separately. In Windows 10 Creators Update and Fall Creators Update you can turn off all background apps by flipping one switch.

To turn off all Windows 10 background apps, do this:

  1. Open Settings  (From Start, Action Center or by using the Windows Key + i shortcut)
  2. Click on “Privacy”
  3. In “Privacy” click on Background apps,
  4. At the top of the Background apps dialog, turn the switch under “Let apps run in the background”  to “Off”

Turning the switch to off does not prevent you from using the apps. If you have live tiles on your start menu (weather, news, etc.) those will not function if you turn the switch off. But if performance and privacy are important to you, you can turn off all background apps in Windows 10 Creators Update, Fall Creators Update and newer versions of Windows 10 quickly by flipping one switch.
